Dr. Cynthia Maher, Psy.D.

Dr. Cynthia Maher (she/her) is a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist with over 20 years of experience working with adolescents and their families. Dr. Maher evaluates and treats children, adolescents, and adults struggling with a full range of psychological concerns. She has expertise in providing evidence-based treatments to clients with a range of psychological issues including Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), anxiety disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and mood disorders. She also has experience working with children and adolescents and their families with issues including school refusal, parent/child conflict, social skills deficits, learning disabilities, developmental/intellectual disabilities, and other related disorders. As a school psychologist with over 20 years experience in a public school setting, Dr. Maher has a thorough knowledge of the New Jersey Special Education Code and provides support, consultation, and guidance to families navigating the special education process.

Education

Dr. Maher earned her undergraduate degree in Psychology at Syracuse University. She went on to earn her doctoral degree in School Psychology at the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology (GSAPP) at Rutgers University. Dr. Maher completed her pre-doctoral APA accredited internship at CPC Behavioral Healthcare, where she worked in school, outpatient, and partial hospitalization settings, providing treatment to children, adolescents, and adults. Her dissertation investigated the effectiveness of a social-emotional development program in a private school for children with severe social, emotional, and behavioral issues.

Experience

At Rutgers University, Dr. Maher received extensive training in cognitive-behavioral treatments of individuals with anxiety disorders, specifically OCD and PTSD. She also received specialized training in treating individuals with developmental disabilities and their family members. Dr. Maher has provided behavioral consultation to families, schools, and residential settings. She currently works as a school psychologist on a child study team, where she provides counseling, crisis intervention, and case management to adolescents, conducts comprehensive psychological evaluations, and consults with teachers and administrators to meet the needs of her students.
